Shortly before the service began, Whitney’s ex-husband Bobby Brown was seen storming out of the church. It is believed he was asked to leave and although he was driven away from the service, he later returned in time for the going-home service.

Other celebrities attending the emotional service included singers Chaka Khan, Brandy, Roberta Flack, Jordin Sparks, Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson. Singer Ray J and his sister Brandy also attended the service.

The ceremony started with a brief welcome by City Mayor Cory Booke.

Pastor Joe Carter then read some scripture and marked the ceremony as the start of the the celebration of Whitney’s life.

He said, ‘Whitney you are the only woman who could bring all of us together, Whitney today is your day.’

One of the messages written in the program was from Whitney’s mom, Cissy Houston, and it read, ‘I never told you that when you were born, the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long.

‘And I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years.

‘Rest, my baby girl in peace’

The letter was signed ‘mommie’.

Gospel singer Donnie McClurken was the first soloist to sing. He performed ‘Stand’ which was a request from the Houston family. He was accompanied by the large gospel choir.

As he came up to sing, he briefly stopped to greet Whitney’s mother Cissy and her daughter Bobbi Kristina who were sitting next to each other on the front row of the church.

Dionne Warwick, who was officiating the service and introducing the guests to the congregation,  told McClurkin after his performance, ‘This song means a lot to Cissy and a great deal to Whitney so thank you.’

Warwick then invited Tyler Perry to come and say a few words.

Perry started by saying, ‘It was Pat (Whitney’s sister-in-law) that introduced me to Whitney. I met her a few years ago.  She told me about things that she went through. I saw this sadness and heaviness.

‘But before she would say what was bothering her she would interrupt and say “But the Lord… But my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ”. I’m thankful for all that God has done in her life.

‘There was a grace that followed her through her life. There was a grace that kept on carrying her. She loved the Lord.’

He ended by saying, ‘God bless you family. We love you Whitney.’

Dionne Warwick then said, ‘That’s someone who truly knew Whitney. He loved the lord and still does.’

She then invited gospel singer Bebe Winans to come up and sing.

Bebe Winans and his sister CeCe Winans came up to the altar. CeCe was a close friend of Whitney’s and is Bobbi Kristina’s Godmother.

Bebe said, ‘Whitney invited us over to her home and we sat in her closet. It was a huge closet.’

He told the story of how Whitney changed her tour so they would be the ones to headline instead of her which made ‘Clive Davies’ mad.

Bebe said that she was doing it because they were ‘poor’ and she was ‘rich’ and she wanted to help them and get them more exposure.

He spoke about how giving their long term friend was and he then sang a heartfelt rendition of ‘I Really Miss You’. The lyrics spoke of how much he will miss her ‘wit, charm, just want to hold you in my arms.’

‘I’ll miss her voice when she will call. I’ll miss her smile most of all. I’m gonna miss you.’

During the song, Bebe’s voice broke as he became emotional and he ended the song in tears.

Warwick then invited renowned pastor Bishop T. D. Jakes to the pew.

He had met Whitney on the set of the remake of ‘Sparkle’, Whitney’s final movie which will be released in August, which he helped to produce.

He opened saying, ‘I really feel the dichotomy at this time. Surrounded by friends and admirers enthralled by the beautiful Whitney Houston. But that’s not what brings you here because you knew who she was. Not what she did. You shared her with the world and we just want to take a moment to say thank you.’

He embarked on a sermon where he talked about the Bible speaking of love being stronger than death.

‘One day you’ll be driving and hear Whitney’s voice in your head, something that she said or did, and you’ll giggle. They may leave you outwardly but they never leave you inwardly.’

Kim Burrell was next to take to the altar. The gospel singer and pastor said Whitney helped her in the start of her career.

She sang a personalized version of ‘A Change Is Going To Come’, where she sang that a change had to come in Whitney’s life.

‘Whitney a change has come,’ she ended the song and then went and gave Cissy a huge hug.

The Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner got up to share memories of his time with his beloved friend.

He started by saying, ‘I would like to thank Cissy and Dionne for the honor of being here. Everyone is treating my wife and I so gracefully.’

‘The song I Will Always Love You almost wasn’t. She was meant to sing What Becomes of the Broken Hearted. So what becomes our broken hearts.

‘For a moment we should dry our tears, suspend our sorrow and anger. Never forgot that Cissy and Bobbi Kristina are sitting among us.

‘Your mother and I had a lot in common,’ he said to Bobbi Kristina. ‘He’s a boy, she’s a girl. I’m white, she’s black. You’d think we had nothing in common but we did.

‘We both grew up in a Baptist church. My grandmother led the choir and played the piano.

Kevin told stories of his childhood in the church that Whitney enjoyed him telling her when they worked together including him ‘drinking grape juice’ in the back of the church.

He laughed, ‘I can see her as a skinny girl running around this place, using her smile to get out of trouble and Cissy having enough of it. Whitney said she was waiting no whisper, her mother Cissy and cousin Dionne.

‘As I’m sure of Whitney’s place in musical history. I’m also sure of how she felt about her mother. Was she good enough. Could I have done better. Did they really like me or were they just being polite because they’re scared of you Cissy?’

Costner spoke about how there was initial anxiety about Whitney, a black woman, to play alongside Kevin Costner.

‘Whitney was nervous and scared that she wasn’t good enough for the role. But I told her I would be with her every step of the way.

‘I wanted to tell her that the fame was rigged. That I didn’t care how the test went, that she could fall down and start speaking in tongues. That somehow it was a kind of acting method.

‘The Whitney I knew despite her worldwide fame always worried. Am I good enough. Am I pretty enough. Will they like me. The part that made her great was also the part that made her stumble.

‘A lot of men could have played my role. But you Whitney were the only person who could have played Rachel Marron. People didn’t just like you Whitney. They loved you. I was your pretend bodyguard once. And now you’re gone too soon.

‘What you did was the rarest of achievements. You set the bar so high. That your colleagues don’t even sing that little country song. What’s the point.

‘I think Whitney would tell you, little girls wanting to become singers. Guard your bodies and guard the precious miracle you have.’

Fighting back tears he said, ‘Off you go Whitney, off you go. Escorted by an army of angels to your heavenly father. When you sing before him. Don’t you worry. You will be good enough.’

Singer Alicia Keys was next to perform and, introducing her Dionne Warwick said she was ‘a young lady that Whitney adored’.

Alicia was tearful as she walked to the piano and spoke about her friendship with the singer.

‘We called each other Meema. She was such a beautiful human being. Call you for no reason at all but just to say hi. And that’s rare I think sometimes.

‘I feel like in so many ways she reached back to me and to Michael and Brandy and Jordin and all these young artists and made us feel strong and capable and loved. I think she is an angel to us. She has been an angel to us.’

Alicia then sang a medley of songs on the piano starting with ‘Send Me An Angel’, changing the lyrics to Whitney is an Angel.

She tightly embraced Cissy and Bobbi Kristina as she stepped off the altar.

Clive Davis was introduced next. He was Whitney’s mentor and guided her career for decades. It was Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party that Whitney was getting ready for on Saturday February 11. She ran a bath in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel but never made it out. She was found dead minutes later.

Clive said that being in the church was helping him and he told of how he lost his mother as a teen when his mother was 47 and he lost his father the following year.

‘I’ve felt my mother’s guidance and she’s helped me through my life. You wait for a voice life Whitney’s for a lifetime. A voice like that. A smile like that. And for someone to embody all of those things is astounding.

‘Whitney and I spent Tuesday afternoon at the Beverly Hills hotel [days before she died] and saw that she had applied some makeup. She was one beautiful woman.

‘We talked non-stop music. In the past every hit we shared was pure joy. When she broke that record of seven consecutive number ones. We felt utter disbelief. We pinched ourselves. She was never arrogant.

‘Whitney held my hand when I worried about her getting The Bodyguard. But she dazzled in her close ups during Run To You. She captured the world forever with I Will Always Love You.

‘Is there anyone who has sang Star Spangled Banner that remotely compares to her. Will there ever be?’ he asked.

He spoke about the songs they listened to and recorded over the years and said the songs were ‘scorching his brain’ right now.

‘Yes she spoke to Oprah about her searing battles but when I needed her she was there. She was there for me. And entirely loyal friend,. I believe in you and me.

‘I was her industry father and was so proud of it.  And Bobbi Kristina – she loved you so very much. She defined not only pure talent but true heart and soul. She will forever be looking after you and never let go of your hand. You should be so proud of your mother.

‘She came to see me and was excited about the new cuts from her new movie Sparkle,’ he said of the soundtrack.

‘I’ve been swimming every day,’ Whitney told Clive. ‘I’m committed to getting my high notes back. No cigarettes. Clive I’ll be ready by August. Well Whitney I will be ready by August. Everyone in heaven including God are waiting. And I just know you will raise the roof like no one has done before.’

Close family friend Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called Aunt Ree, was expected to sing at the service, but was too ill to attend.

Rev Jackson confirmed to CNN she would not be singing, ‘She was at a tremendous event last night at Radio City [Music Hall]. She was up much of the night hosting guests, she had leg spasms.

‘She’s all right, but she can’t do that and reconcile this with her feelings and her schedule.

The service marks exactly one week after the 48-year-old Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel in California. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Fans came from far and wide to see the star being laid to rest.

Melanie Moulton, 37, had set off in her car from her home in Whitby, Ontario in Canada at 3am on Friday and arrived in Newark around 2pm that afternoon. Her mother Rita, 61, had traveled with her too and the pair spent a night in a hotel nearby to make sure they were able to get a good spot.

The journey was around 500 miles and the pair estimated they spent ‘hundreds of dollars’ on the trip including gas and accommodation.

Melanie Moulton said, ‘If I had lived on the other side of the world, I would still have come here today. I’ve loved Whitney since I was a girl and hearing her music made me to get into music production. It’s just such a loss she has gone. She was my inspiration’.

Avalanna, 6, has been struggling with an aggressive and deadly brain cancer ATRT since she was a baby.

She is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments and her dream was to meet Justin Bieber in person.

After her family sent Justin a request via Facebook, the singing sensation flew to visit Avalanna and her family in New York for a special Valentine’s visit.

The pair spent the afternoon playing board games, eating cupcakes, signing autographs for each other before deciding they would get ‘married’.

Avalanna was asked how long she had loved Bieber, to which she replied, ‘Seven years. No – 80 years.’

Justin took to Twitter after the visit saying, ‘That was one of the best things i have ever done. she was AWESOME! Feeling really inspired now!’ before adding: ‘#MrsBieber really inspired me.’

He accompanied his message with a picture of the two hugging and the message, ‘Best part of my day’.

A few days later, Bieber was spotted with his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, on a shopping trip.

There is no doubting the love between the two as Bieber kissed his lady’s hand as they walked around at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles.

The Baby singer gently kissed his girlfriend’s hand as they rode down an escalator and the two are often seen being affectionate with each other when out in public.

Selena, 19, was dressed casually in a bright blue knit sweater, black skinny jeans and black motorcycle boots.

Selena also recently showed off her new ring from Justin on Twitter – a sparkling piece featuring the initial J.

The two have been hanging out a lot with each other and were spotted having breakfast at iHop and playing video games at Chuck E. Cheese. They were seen hanging out with Justin’s dad and his two younger siblings.

According to Hollywoodlife.com, the famous couple was treating Justin’s four-year-old half-sister Jazmyn and half-brother Jaxon, two.

Dressed in a long coral pink knitted top and jeans, with her dark hair in a chic updo, Selena supervised little Jaxson as he reached up to play the games and giggled with Jazmyn as she drove a bright yellow play car.

According to reports, Houston was found surrounded by different bottles of prescription pills including ibuprofen – a painkiller, Xanax – an anti-anxiety drug, Midol, amoxicillin and others.

Pictures of the singing sensation’s final meal show that she had ordered a hamburger, fries and a turkey sandwich which she is said to have eaten in the bathroom right before she died. A Gilette razor, glass of water and items of clothing were also seen laying on the floor.

The pictures also show that there was champagne and beer in the room and there has been speculation that the lethal combination of alcohol with prescription drug Xanax could have been the cause of her death.

I guess no matter what the real story is, it still remains a sad day as one of the greatest singers of all times leaves our world…

Whitney’s doctors are also being questioned as to how she obtained the drugs that were found in her room.

County coroners will request copies of Whitney’s medical records and will then compare them with prescription bottles found in the hotel room.

If it is found that some of the drugs were illegally given to the singer, then a charge will be made. A source said, ‘[Authorities] need to determine that no one is criminally negligent. There still could be charges in this case.’

Whitney’s body has been flown to New Jersey for a funeral to be held at the end of the week.

The funeral is expected to be held at Newark’s Prudential Center, which hosts college and professional sporting events and seats up to 18, 000 people.

TMZ reported that some of the prescription drugs found on the scene, were filled out at Mickey Fine pharmacy, which was raided in 2009 by the DEA for evidence of ‘improper dispensing of controlled substances’, in connection with the death of Michael Jackson.

These reports have yet to be confirmed.

Whitney’s family was allegedly told by Los Angeles County Coroner officials there was not enough water in her lungs to conclude she had drowned in her luxury hotel bathtub and that she had in fact died before her head went under water.

Dionne Warwick was seen for the first time on Monday morning and it is believed that she is heading to the funeral home where Whitney Houston’s body has been transported.

On Monday, President Obama said his thoughts and prayers were with Whitney Houston’s family, especially her daughter.

Press secretary Jay Carney spoke on behalf of the White House, saying the president said it was hard not to be an admirer of the singer’s ‘immense talent’.

He added that it is a tragedy to lose somebody so talented at such a young age.

Whitney’s mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston, issued the following statement, ‘We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends.’

Since her mother’s death, Bobbi Kristina was rushed to hospital twice and relatives now fear she has become suicidal.

She was pictured being taken out of the Beverly Hilton, the same hotel where her mother had died just hours earlier, on a stretcher at 10.30am yesterday and being rushed to Cedars-Sinai where she was treated for extreme anxiety.

She was released several hours later, but friends and family are still very concerned about her mental state.

Whitney Houston’s death cast a shadow over the music industry’s most prestigious event, the Grammy Awards.

Stars lined up to pay tribute to the singer, with X-Factor judge Kelly Rowland saying on the red carpet, ‘We lost our hero.

‘I would not be standing here today if it was not for her. My prayers go out to her mother and her daughter. If we feel this loss, I can only imagine how heavy their loss is.’

Jennifer Hudson sang a tribute to Whitney at the Grammy’s and she broke down in tears as she performed the hit I Will Always Love You.

The talented singer was found dead in her room on the fourth floor at the Beverley Hilton Hotel – she was 48 years old.

The cause of her death is unknown but there is a lot of speculation regarding a drug overdose.

Apparently Whitney’s body was found by her bodyguard in her hotel room.

A spokesman for the local police department said that emergency services had been called to the hotel at 3.43pm on Saturday, arriving minutes later.

They attempted to revive Whitney using CPR and after 20 minutes of unsuccessful attempts, she was pronounced dead at 3.55pm.

Houston died on the night of the Grammy Awards, a place where the singing sensation has shared her phenomenal talent with millions in the past.

Celebrities took to Twitter to express their sadness and to pay their respect.

Mariah Carey wrote, ‘Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston,’

‘My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.’

Mariah’s husband Nick Cannon added, ‘Tell our loved ones how much we love them while they’re still here. I wish I could’ve told Whitney how great she was one last time.’

Singer Gloria Estefan also took to Twitter saying, ‘Shocked we’ve lost the immensely talented Whitney Houston!’

’Sending prayers of peace & solace 2 her family, friends & fans! Such a loss! Such an amazing talent!’

Dolly Parton, who wrote I Will Always Love You, said, ‘mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston. I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, “Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.’”

Singer Aretha Franklin said, ‘I just can’t talk about it now.  It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen. My heart goes out to Cissy (Houston’s mother), her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby (Brown).’

Quincy Jones also released a written statement saying, ‘I am absolutely heartbroken at the news of Whitney’s passing. I always regretted not having had the opportunity to work with her. She was a true original and a talent beyond compare. I will miss her terribly.’

But her passing has affected everyone and even Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to Twitter saying, ‘R.I.P. Whitney Houston. Thank you for the amazing music you brought into the world.’

Houston’s mother Cissie apparently spoke to her daughter just half an hour before her death, and did not think anything was wrong.

The world has surely lost a legend – Whitney won six Grammy awards, two Emmys, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among others.

Her album ‘Whitney’ was the first album by a woman to ever debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Charts. She has sold more than 170million albums worldwide.

At her peak in the 1980′s and 90′s, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world’s best-selling artists.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like ‘The Bodyguard’.

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

Whitney’s image became tarnished by her well-documented troubles, including her turbulent marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

By the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use.

She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

‘The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,’ Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

Houston was born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960′s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

The Duchess was stylishly dressed wearing a grey tweed coat dress by High Street label Jesire stores. The dress had a large shawl collar and a black belt around her waist.

She also wore a pair of black Jimmy Choos and a chunky diamond bracelet to complete her look.

On arrival at the gallery, Kate mingled with arty types including photographer Mary McCartney, Bella Freud, the artist’s daughter, and Jefferson Hack.

This outing marked Kate’s first public event without her husband Prince William and she handled the whole event with ease and grace.

William, 30, is currently in the Falkland Islands where he is expected to be for 6 weeks.

For her first 10 months of marriage, Kate declined to carry out any engagements on her own, preferring to learn the ropes at William’s side.

But now Kate is clearly good to go!

Kate will also visit The Brink, an alcohol-free bar linked to Action on Addiction, of which she became patron of last month, as well as the world-famous Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

The exhibition she attended included more than 100 paintings and works on paper done by Freud loaned from museums and private collections throughout the world. Freud died in July 2011 at the age of 88.

The exhibition also included his famous 1995 nude portrait of Sue Tilley ‘Benefits Supervisor’, which sold in 2008 for a record-breaking £17.2m – making it the most valuable painting ever to be sold by a living artist.

During her visit, the Duchess told photographer Mary McCartney that she had been looking up her work on her website and she was ‘hugely impressed’ by it.

‘It made me blush but I was incredibly flattered. It is refreshing having her here. It is so exciting that she has become involved, ‘ the photographer said.

She told Cosmopolitan magazine, ‘I’m just like every 19-year-old girl. If you’re in love, you’re in love to the fullest, and you just want to go to the movies, hang out, and be as normal as possible. I’m fortunate that I’ve found someone who has that philosophy.’

Last year December, Selena also took time to visit Hana Hwang, 13, who suffers from progeria.

The teen was shocked when her favorite star visited her in her LA hospital.

Hana has now made a video thanking Selena for visiting her.

Selena was originally contacted by Ryan Seacrest about her young fan, and she agreed to visit Hana at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).

Hana was so shocked to meet her pop idol that she was dumb struck and the brave patient told her tutor that she couldn’t speak because she was afraid she would cry and ‘look like a baby’

Hana thanked Selena for visiting her and made her a bracelet and a video message.

This week Selena posted a picture of Hana on Twitter writing, ‘This is my #iwontgiveup photo. Hana is so beautiful and one of the most incredible people I’ve met. Love you’

So it only makes sense that the basketball star would find himself a new place to start his single life and why not start by remodeling his Minnesota home and transform it into a cool bachelor pad?

The 26-year old New Jersey Nets player has done some DIY in his place and has decked out his place with the latest and greatest gadgets.

The sports star told the new issue of Life & Style magazine, ‘Remodelling my place felt great. It was the perfect way to kick off the season and have a fresh start.’

He had some help from the stars of DIY show Man Caves, Jason Cameron and Tony Siragusa, who showed him how it is done.

For his bedroom, Kris chose a burgundy paint and had his initials stenciled above his bed in white.

Jason told the magazine, ‘He wanted a cool, modern space where he could hang out with his buddies and play video games or watch TV.

‘Kris is a nice guy. You could tell he was ready to start a new chapter in his life.’

With his sensual dance moves and great looks, Ricky’s choice of song for his guest appearance on the hit show Glee was spot on.

Dancing to LMFAO’s song ‘Sexy And I Know It’, Ricky showed the Glee club students of McKinley High how it’s done.

Martin, 40, stars in the episode as the lusted after Spanish tutor David Martinez and in a behind-the-scenes video, the singing sensation said, ‘This is how I met the glee club: “Hi, nice to meet you. I’m sexy and I know it and let’s dance!”’

The cast of Glee were thrilled to have Ricky take part in their show.

Chris Colfer who plays the role of Kurt Hummel said, ‘In my three years on Glee, I have never seen a guest star walk onto set and literally everyone is just melting.’

Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry on the hit series, wrote on Twitter, ‘So much fun on set with Ricky!

‘He’s seriously the sweetest and such a great fit for our show!

Ricky seems to feel the same as the cast saying, ‘It’s one of my favorite moments in my career.’

Madonna, 53, performed during the halftime show of the NFL Super Bowl XLVI football game which was between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

She sang all her top hits which included songs like Vogue, Like a Prayer and Music, and she also performed her new song ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’.

The star-studded event was watched by 111 million people and New York made sure to make their stand when they won the game.

Madonna also performed with LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, MIA and Cee Lo Green.

The halftime show opened with a huge procession of Egyptian soldiers carrying a large platform as the intro to Vogue began.

Behind a series of feathers Madonna emerged dressed in a pair of over-the-knee boots, a black dress by Givenchy with a golden Roman-inspired skirt over the top, and a short cape.

She also wore a golden headpiece which was custom made by milliner to the stars Philip Treacy.

Later in the show, Cee Lo Green joined Madonna on an alter which rose up into the air as they sang Like a Prayer.

With the large backing choir behind them the show ended with a message – as Madonna disappeared under the stage the words ‘World Peace’ was written on the large screen floor.

Loads of celebrities took to Twitter to congratulate the singer on her performance.

will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas tweeted, ‘#whatdoyouthinkofthehalftimeperformance I thought madonna rocked..that stage was amazing…I’m so proud of my guys lmfao #madonnaisalegend.’
